Detention Centre, 2007

During a devastating fire in 2005, the Schiphol Airport compound used for detaining immigrants was burned down, leaving 11 inhabitants dead. The subject fueled outrage at the dutch immigration policy, holding people in captivity for no other crime as having no valid papers and denying them basic human rights. The painting has four different versions, all focused on the aftermath of the fire, the damaged tin roof and debris spread out in the yard.
