Albert Siebelink, 1950 – 2015

On the 30th of september my uncle Albert Siebelink passed away. He has been an inspiration for many people. His work and life have been dedicated to celebrate music and culture, the Roma and Sinti culture in particular. He founded many festivals such as the International Gipsy Festival, the Folkfestival and Festival Mundial. He organized theater productions and booked tours for musical groups and he played an important role initiating the traveling performance of Requiem for Auschwitz. During the eighties he performed with the political street orchestra Fanfare Van De Eeuwigdurende Bijstand that would play during strikes and demonstrations, and in later years with his band De Coup.

This drawing is based on an old picture of Albert in 1969, occupying a university class room during a student protest.

August 27, 2014: SOLD!

The painting ‘Directeur’ has found a new home in Amsterdam. It’s a portrait of Bredero director Jan De Vries, one of the masterminds in redeveloping the inner city of Utrecht during the sixties. A large historic quarter of the city center was torn down to make way for a concrete shopping mall and office tower known as ‘Hoog Catharijne’. This painting has been made during a workshop of Expodium in Utrecht that focused on the corporate powers behind city planning.

August 1st, 2014: Hotelroom

The last seven weeks I’ve been working in Copenhagen. I found time to work out some watercolor sketches in my hotelroom at night. I’ve been planning to do a series of portraits and started collecting material, images and sketches. I’m looking forward to do some of these drawings in larger formats. Here’s a snapshot of the hotelroom wall.

May 26, 2014: Jello Biafra T-shirt contest

Attack of the Peacekeepers!! Independent record label Alternative Tentacles has created a contest to design a new tour t-shirt for Jello Biafra and his blistering punk outfit the Guantanamo School of Medicine. I was pretty stoked after seeing these guys raging in my neighborhood club on their first european tour in 2009. Here’s my submission!

Schloss Oranienbaum, the history of  tobacco in Sachsen-Anhalt. An exhibition by gewerk design from Berlin. Tabakcollegium, Schloss Oranienbaum (near Dessau). Permanent exhibition. Read more here (German):
