THE BLIND SPOT

Inkwash on paper, each 40 x 30 cm, 2017

The Blind Spot is an ongoing collection of black ink drawings focused on portraits of ordinary people in the Syrian civil war. It consists now of approximately 100 drawings, all sized 40 x 30 cm. Removed from the background of the particular events of the original photographs, it is the focus on the suffering caused on individuals that becomes the narrative.

The series started with the archiving of hundreds of photos from the news, social media and other sources of the day-to-day brutality. The choice of portraying mostly anonymous people from these pictures was to leave the spectacle out. The representation of suffering is isolated and individual, and happens to civilians, children, recruits and rebels alike. Together, the portraits offer a kaleidoscopic view on an unfolding human tragedy.
